Historical
overlook
The department of Arequipa has a great historic past which goes back to ancient times (8 000 to 6 000 BC). Testimonies of this history are its cave-paintings. The first Spaniards settlers of what was to become Arequipa were the Dominican Priests who built a chapel and later a parish in what is now known as Barrio de San Lázaro. Arequipa was founded on August 15th, 1 540, in the valley of Chili, and was given the name of Villa Hermosa de Nuestra Señora de Asunta or Asunción. In 1 541, a short time after its foundation, it was given the status of city.
When Potosí passed to the Viceroyship of Río de la Plata, Arequipa was no longer a part of the route of the silver that was sent to Spain, and was forced to face severe economic consequences. The city re-emerged thanks to its mines in Caylloma and the development of agriculture. In 1 870, with the arrival of the railroad, Arequipa became an important commercial center in the southern part of Peru.
Arequipa, called the White City for its buildings of white ashlar stone (a volcano stone), was an important bastion against Spain during the Independence war in the nineteenth century. During the twentieth century, many important personages natural of this department have stood out in the country's political and cultural life.

| 1ST. DAY |
LIMA / AREQUIPA: CITY TOUR + SAINT CATALINA |
| |
Departure from the Airport of Lima to the City of Arequipa, reception and transfer to the Hotel. Accommodation in the Hotel.
Visitors will be treated to a tour of the City of Arequipa. They will delight in this sparkling "White City" proudly bearing pronounced traces of its colonial past. This past has left Arequipa some of its finest monuments -the neoclassical facade of the Cathedral, the Andalusian style of its churches, the architecture of the Convent of Santa Catalina, as well as the charms of its colonial mansions. Next to these historic remains of former times, a modern city is blooming, living off its industry and tourist trade. One of the outstanding features of the city is that its nickname arrises from the fact that the city is literally white -constructed primarily of the volcanic rock sillar-.
They will then be taken on a fantasy journey through the XVI century, at the CONVENT OF SANTA CATALINA. This Convent is a Spanish citadel with many patios and plazas that have been painted in deep red and indigo. Visitors will be amazed at this miniature village that housed generations of cloistered nuns until it was recently opened to the public in 1970. They will also see a valuable collection of religious art, including several works from the great "mestizo" artists from the Cusco School of Painting, as well as paintings by Spanish and Italian masters along with carvings and other original works of colonial art.
